Nashville Public Radio is hiring a talented journalist for its year-long, paid Emerging Voices Fellowship.
We launched this fellowship two years ago because the industry lacks the kind of diversity needed to create powerful and nuanced journalism, and we know that not all emerging journalists are even aware of public radio as a career option. We want to address these needs and create paths into public radio, one reporter at a time.
We’re looking for candidates from underrepresented backgrounds in the industry, including race/ethnicity, geography, ideology, socioeconomic status, gender identity, etc. Our most competitive applicants already have a solid foundation in journalism: You are an excellent writer, a thorough reporter; you turn stories on deadline and find sharp angles in daily stories and features. What we don’t expect is proficiency in audio reporting. We’ll teach you how to use a mic, write for the radio and tell stories through sound. Over the course of 12 months, we help our fellows develop a beat according to their interests.
Have a passion for education stories? Eager to cover technology and entrepreneurship? Or underrepresented communities in Tennessee? We’ll give you the editorial support to find and tell those stories. By the end of the fellowship, you’ll have a substantial portfolio of daily spots, sound-rich features and creative web posts to wow your next public radio newsroom.
You’ll join a mid-sized, nationally recognized news team that files regularly for national shows and is seen as a key player in the community. Our staff has diverse life experiences and hails from around the country, but we chose to come to — and often put roots in — Nashville because it’s a city where a single reporter can make an impact.
The Emerging Voices Fellowship runs for one year, starting Nov. 4, 2019. The salary is $40,000 plus benefits.
The deadline to apply for the fellowship is Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019. To apply, please send the following to [email protected] and note in the subject line that you’re applying for the Emerging Voices Fellowship:

- Either in the cover letter or in a separate document, tell us how your background and experiences have influenced your career path and how they would add to the diversity of the newsroom
