The University of Tennessee Knoxville did not get the quick stamp of approval it was looking for on its new student code of conduct.

After months of revision and comment periods, UT's new policy needed a committee of state lawmakers to sign off Wednesday to be effective by the time the semester begins next week. Lawmakers did — but not without some contention and caveats.

The University of Tennessee's flagship campus in Knoxville is hoping to implement a new student code of conduct this fall, something that hasn't been done in four decades. UT officials say the changes make the code less punitive and will help students learn from mistakes.

When does criticism of the nation of Israel cross into anti-Semitism?

Tennessee lawmakers are wrestling with that question as part of the debate over a measure that takes aim at the University of Tennessee, over its handling of some comments by Muslim students that critics say constituted hate speech.

The dispute goes back to August, when several UT-Knoxville students were accused of comparing Israel to Nazi Germany.

The football teams from the University of Tennessee and the University of Nebraska are in Nashville prepping for Friday's Music City Bowl. And even though they're competitors, they're staying in the same hotel.

It's a unique undertaking for the Gaylord Opryland Resort, which not only houses them but also has to figure out how to feed two high-powered football programs.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville plans to hire its first female chancellor.

The school announced Monday that it wants Beverly Davenport to take over the position next March with a salary of $585,000, calling her a "proven higher education leader."

Davenport has been a top administrator at the University of Cincinnati for three years and its interim president since July. During her time there, she launched a program to recruit more minority and female faculty. The number of women hired has doubled since she started, according to her bio.

An organization that advocates small government is out with its annual report on what it calls wasteful spending, and it's putting the University of Tennessee's Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the top of the list.
