It took years of courting, a pitch from the Kings of Leon and the promise of economic incentives to lure nonstop flights from London back to Nashville.

But two decades after direct-to-London service stopped, executives at British Airways are confident this time it can succeed.

Nashville last had nonstop service to London in the mid-1990s. But back then, the goal was to ferry passengers across the Atlantic from several different originations, and the flights were discontinued when American Airlines closed its Nashville hub.

Monday was the busiest day ever for people departing Nashville International Airport. 25,000 people boarded a plane. It was a 10 percent jump from the previous single-day record. And the previous record was set on the same Monday after Bonnaroo and CMA Fest last year.

The Nashville airport broke ground today on the first project in a major expansion: building a 2,000-space parking garage and a new roadway, which will cost $122 million in total. The parking garage itself will cost $85 million.

Over the next several years, it also plans to build an onsite hotel and international arrivals building, relocate roads to accommodate traffic, and expand ticketing and baggage claims.

Among the Nashville International Airport’s newly announced $1 billion expansion is an emphasis on the “international” part of its name. A renovated building for overseas arrivals would be one of the first projects.

Nashville International Airport unveiled plans for a billion-dollar expansion over the weekend, releasing a promotional video. The vision includes an on-site hotel, an entirely new entrance called the "Grand Ole Lobby," and an international arrivals building meant to set the stage for non-stop flights to Europe, Asia and Latin America.

The Nashville airport is adding another nonstop flight to the Bay Area. United Airlines announced Tuesday it will start flying daily to San Francisco on May 5, about a year after Southwest Airlines launched a direct flight to Oakland.

Nashville’s tourism officials have two more accolades to show off.

Travel site Lonely Planet ranked Nashville as one of the top 10 cities to visit next year — and it was the only U.S. destination to make the list. TripAdvisor says Nashville grew in popularity among international travelers by nearly 40 percent.
