Many schools aspire for racial diversity. But that’s not quite the aim of the newest charter school in North Nashville. KIPP Nashville College Prep Elementary says it is embracing what is a reality for most schools in the area: that students are primarily African-American, and instead of swimming against the current, it’s trying to turn cultural isolation into a positive.

The clock has run out for Metro Schools to make amends with KIPP Nashville. That means for the first time, the Tennessee State Board of Education will oversee the opening of charter schools.

Metro Board To Let State Run KIPP Schools

The Metro School Board will let the state run two charter schools that had been rejected locally but then approved on appeal last month.

 

On a split vote of 4-4, the panel voted last night to have the Tennessee Board of Education run two schools that will be operated by KIPP Nashville. Board member Anna Shepherd missed the meeting.

The Tennessee Board of Education entered uncharted territory Friday morning, when it voted unanimously to open a pair of charter schools that had been denied by the Nashville school board in August.
