Your First Look at the 2018-19 Nashville Symphony Season

Jan 29, 2018

Nashville Symphony audiences will find both familiar and new music in the 2018-19 season lineup, with a continuation of some favorite traditions from past seasons.

Bernstein appears several times on the calendar, with a Centennial celebration marking what would have been the composer’s 100th birthday. Classics from Beethoven, Mahler and Tchaikovsky are each paired with live recordings of music from contemporary American composers, including the world premiere of Aaron Jay Kernis’s Symphony No. 4, commissioned by the Nashville Symphony and the New England Conservatory.

The popular series pairing music with images from the cosmos continues with Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World,” and audiences can look forward to appearances from featured performers Gil Shaham, Emmanuel Ax, Midori and Jean-Yves Thibaudet.

With the success of last year’s “Reach for the Stars,” the symphony’s first-ever sensory friendly program, every concert in this year’s Ann & Monroe Carell Family Trust Family Series will now be designed to accommodate patrons with disabilities that may cause sensory sensitivities.

After an appearance from John Williams last fall, the program again dedicates an evening to the beloved film composer’s music, as well as live performances of his scores during screenings of several movies, including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Hometown favorites Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer return for a special performance with Zakir Hussain, and highlights from the jazz and pop series include appearances from Branford Marsalis and Kristen Chenoweth.
