On Thursday, the 101st Airborne Division packed up its battle flags to mark the end of its mission in West Africa. Troops didn’t have to build nearly as many Ebola treatment units as first expected, mostly because the number of cases began to drop off.

Black lawmakers in Tennessee are calling for Rep. Sheila Butt to lose her leadership post in the state House of Representatives.

The plea comes after Butt took to the House floor Thursday to defend a Facebook post that many are calling offensive. But, so far, Republican leaders are standing by the Columbia lawmaker.

State Rep. Sheila Butt defended her Facebook comment calling for the creation of organizations to represent Christians and people of European descent in a speech this morning from the floor of the Tennessee House of Representatives.

Butt (R-Columbia) said the comment was meant to be "inclusive," that she would stand for hers and other lawmakers' First Amendment rights, that she believes the nation is stronger when it stands for Christian values and that others were trying to make her comment seem divisive.

Tennessee lawmakers have given initial approval to make it easier for Nashville's downtown convention-goers to carry around alcoholic beverages.

A House subcommittee passed a measure Wednesday that would allow people to have open containers on a one-block stretch outside between the Music City Center, Omni Hotel and Country Music Hall of Fame.

Rep. Bill Sanderson says he's proud of the business the convention center brings to Nashville, so he wants to help them out in any way possible. "We don’t want to stand in their way, that’s for sure.”

Meet Barry “Butch” Wilmore, your friendly local astronaut.

Wilmore grew up in Mt. Juliet and went to Tennessee Tech University and the University of Tennessee. Then he enlisted in the Navy, became a pilot and then — an astronaut.

“Step by step, eventually I was in a position where I had qualifications to do this job, and it was something that was always in the back of my mind,” Wilmore told WPLN during an interview in September, right before he launched up to the International Space Station.
