The BlackLift Music & Poetry Festival will begin 2pm at East Branch Library & will continue at 4pm at Bongo East & at 6pm at The Five Spot. This year the organizers have joined forces with the National Museum of African American Music, Lovenoise, 5 Spot, & Bongo Java East to extend the day through the evening. 2pm – East Branch Library: Southern Word’s annual Black History House, a celebration of the African diaspora; past, present, & future. New & established poets of all ages share pieces sparked by the artists’ heroes & influences. The event is hosted by Rashad Rayford. 4pm – Bongo East: In partnership with the National Museum of African American Music’ Fine Tuning: Master Series. Trumpeter, composer, vocalist, lyricist & producer Rod McGaha is joined by writer, actor, &; Southern Word mentor Shawn Whitsell for a blended music & poetry writing workshop. Feel free to bring children 11 & Up. 6pm – The 5 Spot: Lovenoise presents a showcase featuring poet Rashad Rayford’s lyricism & singer Morgan Bosman’s deep, soulful melodies complimented by sweet jazz, R&B, & gospel roots. Look out for cameos from Southern Word’s elder youth poets. 21 & Up only. $10
