Independent candidates on this year’s ballot are in a fight against history. No Tennessean has become governor or won a congressional seat without a party affiliation. But long odds haven’t stopped more than 40 independents from jumping in this year.

The three main Republican candidates for governor all say they’re open to making the position of state attorney general an elected office. Currently Tennessee’s supreme court appoints an attorney general, who must then argue before that court, leading some to call it a conflict of interest.
The state legislature has now passed the budget for next year, and Governor Phil Bredesen says he’s largely pleased with the way it turned out.
The candidates didn’t ring a bell for most Tennesseans, even when pollsters read each name out loud.
