The Nashville Predators will manage a city-owned ice rink slated for the site of the old Hickory Hollow Mall. The $14 million complex was officially announced Monday.

The Predators will have use of the facility and manage public skating. Nashville Mayor Karl Dean says it will give additional space for youth hockey leagues to play and host tournaments.

“We are also building our future fan base for professional hockey in Nashville.”

The Predators are even planning to offer beginner hockey leagues for free as an introduction to the sport.

The team will have its logos plastered on the outside of the building, but taxpayers are paying for construction. The Predators already practice at the city-owned Centennial Sportsplex. The additional facility is part of the team’s most recent contract agreement to use Bridgestone Arena.

The ice rink will be part of a larger project already in the works to build a city library, community center and park in Antioch. Completion is scheduled for late summer next year.
