Free Will Baptist Changes Name to Broaden Appeal

The library on the campus of Free Will Baptist Bible College was already named after John and Mary Welch.

Nashville’s Free Will Baptist Bible College is no more, at least in name. The 70-year-old school has announced effective immediately it will be called Welch College.

The name-change coincides with an upcoming move from the school’s West End campus to a larger site in Gallatin.

The Free Will Baptist denomination will continue to own and operate Welch College, according to a press release. President Matt Pinson says the school will remain committed to its “Christian mission.” He adds that a new name will help attract a broader variety of students to professional programs and online degrees.

Welch comes from the names of early supporters of the college – Reverend John and Mary Welch – who already had a building named after them on campus.
