Nashville Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

An Army solider from Nashville has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon says 29 year old  Captain Joshua S. Lawrence died Saturday in Kandahar Province. He was killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with a rocket propelled grenade. Captain Drew E. Russell of Michigan was also killed in the attack.

Lawrence was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson Colorado.

According to his Facebook profile, Lawrence was a 2000 graduate of Hume-Fogg High School. He also attended Austin Peay State University, where he studied Political Science and History.  He joined the US Army in 2005.

Lawrence was awarded a number of honors during his military career, including the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal.
